NBA 2K22 is the next game in 2K's long-running basketball simulation franchise. Like NBA 2K21, the game is being supported across both last- and current-gen consoles. That means, players can upgrade from PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S without needing to worry about purchasing the game twice when it launches on September 10.
The one thing that's important to keep in mind, however, is how 2K is handling cross-gen progression. Like many other sports games, 2K22 has an Ultimate Team mode called MyTeam. Here, players can earn new cards of their favorite superstars from the NBA's past and present. If they had to start over when upgrading to a new console, that would be a major hindrance for dedicated 2K fans.
Fortunately, the game will support cross-gen progression. Players will be able to bring their full MyTeam collection across generations of consoles when they decide to upgrade. That means every player will come along, as well as any of the in-game currency that someone has purchased or earned. The one caveat here is that 2K22 will only support cross-progression within the same family of consoles - meaning PS4 progression can't be saved and transferred to Xbox Series X, for example. Likewise, progression from Xbox One cannot be saved and transferred over to the PlayStation 5.
While this a great boon to NBA 2K22, it's also worth noting that players have to purchase the Cross-Gen Digital Bundle if they want to receive this benefit. NBA 2K22 has four different editions to choose between, making it very important to select the correct one. The Cross-Gen version is digital only and will cost players $70. It does come with a few extra in-game items to sweeten the pot even more, however, but the price is a slight step up from the Standard Edition and may cause a few prospective buyers to balk at the price tag.
The final point to keep in mind when considering which version to purchase is that NBA 2K22 does not support cross-play. Unfortunately, for example, this means players on PS5 cannot play with their friends on PS4. Because of this, many users may stick with whatever generation has more players - or more of their friends. For most people, that's likely not a big deal, but some users might only be interested in playing online against friends, so it's worth considering before buying.
