I Am Legend writer Akiva Goldsman reacted to those who won't get the COVID-19 vaccine due to fears originating from the film. Before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic even occurred, there has been data accumulated on various coronaviruses that can lead to other diseases. By using this information, vaccines were able to go under development much quicker than what would typically be expected. Distribution plans were established across numerous countries around the world, although some folks have refused to get the vaccine for an array of different reasons.
Goldsman is most known for his work writing the 2007 film I Am Legend along with Mark Protosevich, which was adapted from Richard Matheson's 1954 book that goes by the same name. The movie is directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire). The story is set around Robert Neville (Will Smith), who is a U.S. Army virologist. The setting is New York City after a virus leaves the landscape under a post-apocalyptic reality. While the virus was established to cure cancer, it ended up killing off the majority of humans. With Neville being the last person in New York, him and his dog fight to survive against terrifying mutants.
Goldsman responded to a post highlighting a person using I Am Legend as the reason for not getting the COVID-19 vaccine. The Hollywood blockbuster has been pointed at as the reason on social media, although other users have been quick to jump on refusing the assertion. The writer reacted in total disbelief. As the original post indicates, the mutants seen in the film didn't turn that way due to a vaccine. Rather, they were zombified as a result of a reprogrammed virus. Even if the zombies in I Am Legend were created by a vaccine, there's no reason why a fictional film should be taken as scientific fact. There have been various vaccines given in the past and none of them have created zombies. Away from I Am Legend, Goldsman previously won the Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published for A Beautiful Mind back in 2001.
The folks who have refused to get the COVID-19 vaccine have given numerous excuses for why they won't get it. Turning to fictional stories told in film shouldn't be used as a scientific roadmap, especially when those leading their field have proven data. If everybody had gotten the vaccine who could have, the world would be in a much better state against the virus and the variants that have been making the situation even worse. In addition, those who have actually paid attention watching I Am Legend know that the zombies were created by re-engineering the measles virus.
