Baseball sim MLB The Show 21 has added the iconic Field of Dreams as a playable stadium in its latest content update. The Field of Dreams was made famous in the 1989 film of the same name, which was nominated for multiple Academy Awards and is often viewed as one of the most significant baseball movies of its time. Field of Dreams' small diamond in the middle of an Iowa cornfield is an important part of the sport's culture.
While players have already been using the game's custom players and stadium creator to recreate beloved film locations like The Sandlot in MLB The Show 21, the Field of Dreams is its first officially licensed crossover. The real-world MLB has been working on its own tribute to the film for a while, as well. In 2020, a real-life version of the Field of Dreams just outside the original filming site in Iowa was constructed, where a real season game between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees was planned to take pace. That game was ultimately postponed due to the pandemic, but it is now scheduled to be played on August 12.
In a new blog post on the game's official site, Sony San Diego announced that MLB The Show 21 will also be part of that baseball celebration. On Monday, a fully playable version of the Field of Dreams came to the title as part of a content update. The update is free to download for PlayStation and Xbox MLB The Show 21 players, and the developer has also lined up a full week of live content dedicated to Field of Dreams.
According to the blog, San Diego Studio worked directly with MLB field architects to recreate the real-life version of the Field of Dreams in-game. The game's take replicates everything from the field dimensions and light structures down to the seating and rows of corn. Even the smaller field that was used for the original movie can be seen in the background, just as it will at the in-person MLB game on August 12.
The Field of Dreams in MLB The Show 21 is both a fun nod to the classic film and an interesting tie-in to an actual MLB event, as one can theoretically play along with the White Sox and Yankees' digital counterparts while the game is happening live in Iowa. While nothing of the sort has been confirmed at press time, this crossover could open the door to future MLB crossovers in the future. MLB The Show will have EA's baseball games to compete with soon, so direct collaboration with the league could set Sony's franchise apart in fans' minds.
MLB The Show 21 is available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.
