Incredibles: Violet Is Edna's Daughter - Theory Explained

Pixar introduced a new superhero family with The Incredibles, but a fan theory suggests that Violet is actually the secret daughter of Edna Mode. Released in 2004, The Incredibles centers on the Parr family, led by Bob Parr aka Mr. Incredible and his wife Helen aka Elastigirl. The movie was incredibly well-received upon its release, but Pixar waited until 2018 to tell the next chapter in the franchise.

Throughout the first two Incredibles films, audiences had a lot of time to get to know each member of the Parr family. Bob and Helen played central roles in both films, as they both struggled and succeeded at times with the duties of being a superhero. They aren't the only powered people in their family, though, as all three of their kids have powers of some sort. Violet is their oldest daughter who can turn invisible and create force fields. Dash is their second child who has superspeed. Jack-Jack is a baby with many powers. However, one Incredibles theory suggests Bob and Helen adopted one of their children.

According to the popular Incredibles theory, Violet Parr is actually Edna Mode's daughter. The movies do not indicate that Violet is adopted, but viewers don't have to do more than look at Violet alongside the rest of the Parr family to notice the differences. Violet's black hair and more rounded nose stand out amongst the rest of the family. Bob and Dash have blonde hair, while Helen and Jack-Jack have red hair. All four of them also have pointy noses. Even for being a super-family, Violet looking so different from the rest of the family is a genetic oddity — that is, unless she was adopted. The Incredibles also happens to feature another prominent female character with black hair and a round nose: Edna Mode.

Beyond the similarities between Violet and Edna's looks and Violet not looking like the rest of her family, The Incredibles has a possible story explanation for this adoption too. It was revealed that Edna comes out of a 15-year retirement from the superhero world during The Incredibles to repair Bob's suit. Violet happens to be 14 years old. The theory suggests that Edna retired from the superhero game after superheroes became banned and because she was pregnant with Violet. However, once Violet was born 9 months later and began exhibiting powers of her own, Edna turned to her most trusted superheroes for help: Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl.

Unless Incredibles 3 or a Disney+ spinoff show is made in the future, this theory is likely to remain nothing but a fun piece of speculation. If Edna is Violet's mom though, that would change how viewers can interpret different moments in the Incredibles franchise. For starters, Edna's joy to babysit Jack-Jack during the first movie could come from her not being able to raise Violet on her own. It also gives her an added incentive to create new super suits for the Parr family, since she could then help protect Violet and allow her to better harness her powers. All in all, this theory does work with what The Incredibles presents rather nicely.
