After years on the alternative music scene, All Time Low has continued to maintain a strong presence, and the time is fast approaching for them to debut on a new stage with the release of their upcoming graphic novel Young Renegades in partnership with Z2 Comics. Fans are now getting the chance to catch an exclusive glimpse of the novel's story, which adapts and expands on the mythos and world of the band's album Last Young Renegade.
For some, the golden era of alternative rock, or more specifically, pop punk, in the 2000's and 2010's marked a phase of underground head banging, anti-establishment raging, and side-bang sweeping glory; and for others, the phase never ended. The intense widespread popularity of that genre of music may not be quite as fervent now, but it continues to remain firmly rooted in the music scene. Vans Warped Tour may have ended, but other festivals, like this year's Sad Summer Fest (at which All Time Low is performing), are quickly popping up to take its place. And for those who need even more to satisfy their need for punk, Z2 Comics and All Time Low have provided a sneak peak at what's promising to be a nostalgia packed adventure.
All Time Low Presents: Young Renegades, written by Tres Dean with art by Robert Wilson IV and Megan Huang, is the band's opportunity to further explore a world they created with their seventh studio album, Last Young Renegade, back in 2017. The novel's publisher Josh Frankel also previously described it as "an authentic love letter to the Warped Tour generation" and with this preview, it's become obvious how accurate that statement is. In these few pages from the upcoming novel, which is set to release sometime this month, readers are taken on a trip back in time to experience Warped Tour's "Lucky 13" in 2007 through the eyes of the story's main characters.The genre and the tour had been around for years at this point, but the mid-to-late 2000's set an epic stage for a sort of pop punk, alt-rock golden era; and All Time Low was a main contributor. This makes it both fitting, and slightly meta, that the set they're watching is none other than All Time Low itself. Check out the cover and preview pages below!
This blast from the past brings back all of the ripped shorts, messy fringe hair, black bottle dye, head banging nostalgia that fans could expect from a graphic novel inspired by a pop punk album. It also seems like it's going to allow current fans, and even those who grew out of that phase, to relive it all. But that's only part of it. Most of it looks like it's going to take place in the present, with the two main characters reconnecting and bonding over their past rock-loving lives and going on a Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist style adventure together. It also comes at a time when multiple other bands, like Sublime, have been releasing their own graphic novels.
The nostalgia factor aside, this seems like it will be a book for all music lovers. The excitement and thrill that comes with seeing live music is being brought to the printed page in a way that still brings sound and life to the experience, even in a silent format. So for fans of All Time Low, Warped Tour, pop punk, and music in general, this may be a graphic novel to get your hands on when it's released, as it's promising to be both visually and thematically exciting. With All Time Low Presents: Young Renegades, it's time to relieve the past, find that teenage excitement once again, and embark on a musical adventure created by, and written for, the fans.
