Star Wars Confirms More Jedi Used To Be Like Qui-Gon Jinn

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The High Republic #9

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Star Wars: The High Republic, it's revealed that there used to be more Jedi like Qui-Gon Jinn, particularly the Jedi featured aboard the Outer Rim's Starlight Beacon. Just as Qui-Gon didn't fall in line with the mandates of the Jedi Council (which often led to tensions due to his defiance), this new issue reveals that Starlight's Jedi Marshall Avar Kriss and those under her command have decided to defy the will of the Council. This action is in the service of the greater good, as they desire to defeat the growing threat of the marauding Nihil once and for all.

In The High Republic #9 by Cavan Scott and Ario Anindito, Starlight Beacon is debriefing with the Jedi Council's Stellan Gios over hologram. While Avar Kriss and her Jedi are determined to scout out a region of space with reported Nihil activity, Gios denies their request by saying that the Republic's Unified Task Force has already swept that area despite the new information and leads Starlight has gathered. As a result, Avar Kriss comes up with a plan to confirm the Nihil's operations in the Soola System, knowingly defying the Council's will while also risking the lives of two of her Jedi: Jedi Knights Keeve Trennis and Terec.

Essentially, Keeve and Terec are sent out to pose as members of the Nihil, getting picked up by a greater force so that they can infiltrate their base of operations in order to confirm who the Nihil's new leader might be (known as the Eye). Clearly, it's a risky plan on multiple counts, as well as the fact that it's by no means sanctioned by the Jedi Council (meaning it's a plan Qui-Gon Jinn probably would have loved). Not only could the two undercover Jedi be caught and killed, but there's also an inherent risk of them falling into the Nihil's darkness as they strive to prove themselves.

By the issue's end, Keeve is already at risk of compromising her Jedi path after being told to prove herself by killing the Nihil's captive Myarga the Hutt, a leading member of the Hutt clans who was instrumental in the Jedi/Hutt alliance against the Drengir. While it's unclear how she'll get out of this situation (if she even can), it seems as though the Jedi of this era are more willing to exercise their passions and frustrations with the powers that be, listening to the will of the Force over the will of the Council (which was Qui-Gon's entire motivation as a Jedi).

That being said, it remains to be seen if this new mission truly is the Force's will. It's certainly dangerous and risky, and it's bound to be full of more tests beyond Myarga that could be compromising for both Keeve and Terec, potentially compromising their respective Jedi paths. In any case, should the mission during the High Republic prove to be a success despite the lack of a blessing from the Council, it could be a story Qui-Gon Jinn himself might have been inspired by hundreds of years later in his own time when he was defying the Council's will in favor of the Force.
