A trailer for Aquaman: King of Atlantis teases James Wan's upcoming animated series on HBO Max. Though director James Wan and Aquaman actor Jason Momoa are hard at work on the DCEU sequel titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Wan has another foray into Atlantis on the horizon, a three-part animated event known as Aquaman: King of Atlantis. The miniseries was first announced last year, following by a first look this February as Warner Bros. previewed their upcoming slate of animated projects.
Though fans of the DCEU likely wanted to see actors Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, and Patrick Wilson from the live-action films reprise their roles in the animated series, Aquaman: King of Atlantis has still assembled an impressive voice cast. Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead) takes on the lead role of Aquaman, while Community's Gillian Jacobs is Princess Mera. Thomas Lennon (Reno 911) and Dana Snyder (Jellystone!) fill out the cast as Vulko and Ocean Master. The animated series will be a more light-hearted take on the story as it follows Aquaman on his first day on the job as King of Atlantis.
Now, the first full look at Aquaman: King of Atlantis is here in the form of a trailer. It wastes no time setting up the premise of the HBO Max series. Aquaman is in his early days as ruler of the underwater city and, before dealing with the more serious matters at hand, his first challenge appears to be finding a comfortable sitting position on his throne. From executive producer James Wan, the animated series appears to be much brighter and peppier than the director's live-action fare. The show's aesthetic is similar to another Warner Bros./Cartoon Network series, ThunderCats Roar!, which was to be expected given they share a showrunner in Victor Courtright. Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles writer Marly Halpern-Graser also serves as showrunner.
Alongside his trusted advisors Vulko and Mera, the series will chronicle Arthur Curry's attempts to protect Atlantis from "unscrupulous surface dwellers" and "elder evils from beyond," according to the official synopsis. As expected, he will also have to squash his own half-brother's attempts to overthrow him. Every indication so far is that Aquaman: King of Atlantis will be a more irreverent and light-hearted take on this familiar story. The first episode of this three-part trilogy airs on HBO Max on October 14 and will air subsequently on Cartoon Network.
