Over the course of its time on Bravo, the Real Housewives franchise has featured some cast members who stir up controversy. Certain stars are known for their off-camera antics. Others were involved in physical altercations that happened during filming. There were times when Real Housewives producers stepped in to stop fights.
Each city is home to some women who know how to stir the pot. Although some of these housewives no longer grace viewers' screens, they've all made an impact on their respective shows. This impact can't be overstated.
While many housewives are controversial for a variety of reasons, a few have found themselves in trouble with the law. Sometimes this has happened offscreen, such as when Countess LuAnn de Lesseps was arrested for battery and public intoxication. However, there have been a few instances when housewives' legal drama has been the subject of controversy on their shows. Here are three examples of housewives who have found themselves in the middle of big controversies.
When news broke that The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Erika Girardi was filing for divorce from longtime husband Tom Girardi, it wasn't exactly a new phenomenon. After all, plenty of Real Housewives have split with their partners over the years. Fractured relationships attract viewers because they spark dramatic scenes. However, it was soon revealed that there was more to Erika and Tom's story. Lawyers alleged that Tom had been taking money promised to victims he had represented for years.
He was accused of illegally keeping the cash for himself. There were also allegations that this money had been used to fund Erika and Tom's lavish lifestyle. For example, there was talk that the monies in question had been used for frivolous purchases, including Erika from RHOBH's glam squad. Although the case is still pending in court, Erika's reputation has taken a hit and the drama has been the centerpiece of the most recent RHOBH season. It seems unlikely that her former image will be fully restored after the scrutiny she has been facing due to her legal troubles.
After her first season on the newest show in the franchise, Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, it was clear that Jen Shah was shaping up to be a fan favorite. Even though she faced a host of controversy on the show, nothing would compare to what was coming in season two. During filming for a cast trip, Shah from RHOSLC was taken into custody by FBI officials. She was indicted on charges of wire fraud and a conspiracy to launder funds as part of a telemarketing scheme. While Jen has strongly proclaimed her innocence, no other housewife except Teresa Giudice has ever faced federal criminal charges. Given that the arrest took place during the course of filming, it will almost certainly affect the conversations that take place during the upcoming season.
While tons of antics take place on the various shows in the franchise, nothing comes close to what this star of the short-lived The Real Housewives of D.C. got entangled in. Along with her husband, RHODC housewife Michaele Salahi attended a State dinner hosted by President Barack Obama in 2009. The thing is, they weren't actually invited. This was a serious social faux pas and it launched a massive investigation into how the couple made it past the Secret Service and into the White House without invitations. Even though the couple did not face criminal charges, Michaele did have to testify in front of Congress. The scandal was the downfall of the show. There have been plenty of parties in the franchise, but none have ever been a national security risk like this one. Controversial Real Housewives push the envelope, and sometimes, they pay a price.
