Supernatural: 10 Things About Sam Winchester That Have Aged Poorly

The CW’s Supernatural might just be the show with the most potential to binge-watch, as there are fifteen seasons for viewers to check out. However, this also means that the show began at a time where some things were a little more acceptable in a series than they would be now.

Jared Padalecki’s Sam Winchester was the nice guy to his brother Dean’s bad boy image, but contemporary viewers and returning fans are likely to find problematic things about him. It comes down to the different points of view people have now that the show isn’t there on a weekly basis, and it’s interesting to see aspects of Sam that won’t fly well today.

10 Sam's Decision Not To Look For Dean In Purgatory

Dean was sent to Purgatory after killing Dick and managed to return after a year. He was disappointed to learn that Sam had never tried to find him, which led to a period of estrangement between them. At the time, viewers didn’t turn on Sam because it appeared as if he had a good reason.

As it turned out, Sam had no excuse at all, which now makes him comes across as particularly selfish since he also left Kevin to fend for himself at the hands of Crowley. Fans aren’t willing to forgive Sam’s decision especially due to the fact that he didn’t even make a slight effort to learn where Dean had vanished to.

9 Sam's Ultimatum To Dean To End His Friendship With Benny

Benny and Dean are a Supernatural duo that should’ve had more screentime, but they never got to be together because of Sam. He gave Dean an ultimatum to choose between staying with him or going off with Benny, as Sam didn’t trust the former due to his status as a vampire.

Back then, fans were apprehensive about Benny themselves, so they were inclined to let Sam’s behavior slide. With the benefit of hindsight now, it’s known that Benny was always a loyal friend and never harmed an innocent human. He even gave his life to save Sam in Purgatory, making Sam look even worse at the end of things.

8 Sam's Hopes To Split Up With Dean After Finding John

Fans generally sympathize with Dean over the need to have his family all together and it has only increased now considering Dean never got to have a wife or children (which he did express a want for). To this end, Sam’s intentions to leave Dean again after locating John in the first season isn’t something people relate to.

Viewers are more inclined to see Sam as being ungrateful for Dean’s company during the time he was grieving Sarah’s death, as he didn’t think to consider Dean’s feelings. It’s also aged badly because the event took place fifteen years before the show was over and it’s obvious nothing came out of it.

7 Sam And Amelia

The entire arc with Amelia has never been a favorite for viewers but Sam shed his good-guy image particularly nastily near the end of his association with her. Sam became intimate with Amelia when she saw him checking up on her, at a time when she had already reconciled with her husband.

It’s aged worse because the angle didn’t have any bearing on the show’s future, with Sam simply ditching Amelia for good at the end of the episode to return to hunting with Dean. It’s now seen as a rare occasion where Sam acted out of character, seemingly happy to be part of a cheating situation.

6 The Frequent Deaths Of Sam's Love Interests

Contemporary viewers are quick to call out the problem of women getting killed off to further the plot, with this termed 'fridging'. Sam’s love interests were constantly targeted by the villains in Supernatural, with just about every one of his romances ending up dead.

The aspect is certain to be seen in a negative light by those who watch the show now and it’s more than likely that older fans will also not enjoy it in retrospect. Sam also didn’t seem to learn how to protect his love interests despite the fact that he’d seen so many of these women die.

5 Sam's Inability To Stand Up To Dean

Sam’s meek behavior toward Dean could be excused as the setup for character development in earlier seasons, yet it didn’t happen as he ended up just doing what his brother told him. By the end of the show’s run, Dean had made many irresponsible and rash decisions that Sam could’ve argued against but didn’t.

Fans are liable to get frustrated watching Sam simply continue to accept Dean's lead during times like the latter’s plan to kill Sam’s surrogate son Jack, where he should have done something about it but didn’t.

4 Sam's Betrayal Of Crowley

Having been introduced as a self-serving demon, Crowley became one of the best Supernatural villains. Fans tend to forgive his evil actions due to his charisma and Sam’s attempt to kill Crowley isn’t something they appreciate, even more so today when viewers know Crowley eventually gave his life for Sam and Dean.

Sam was particularly vicious on this occasion, pretending to be Dean to lure Crowley to a secluded location where he shot him from afar. Viewers also know that Sam did plenty of bad things himself in the following seasons and his holier-than-thou attitude during the scene has aged pretty badly.

3 Sam's Hand In The Return Of The Darkness

Supernatural viewers had the habit of getting wrapped up in the current storyline to realize that the protagonists weren’t doing the right thing. Sam did plenty of bad things to remove the Mark of Cain off Dean, including orchestrating the killing of the innocent Oskar to complete the spell.

At the time of airing, fans didn’t mind as much because they thought it was for Dean’s benefit, only for the Mark of Cain to then release the Darkness. Amara ended up killing thousands of people, all of whose blame falls on Sam’s shoulders, who also has the blood of Oskar on his hands.

2 Sam's Original Abandonment Of Dean

While there were times where Dean betrayed Sam in Supernatural’s history, many fans have come to the conclusion that the elder Winchester was struggling due to his younger sibling’s abandonment of him. It happened two years before the series began, with Dean claiming the day Sam left was the worst day of his life.

Flashback episodes also revealed that Dean had had numerous opportunities to leave himself, but returned due to his love for Sam, which contributes to how badly his original abandonment of Dean has aged. All things considered, the characters might have been better off if Sam had stuck with his family.

1 Sam's Supposed Evil Arc That Went Nowhere

TV shows these days feature few episodes that close up storylines fairly quickly, meaning viewers don’t take kindly to abandoned storylines. Sam had one when he was supposed to become evil after Dean made a deal to resurrect him, with the implication that he’d gunned down Jake because he was going to turn bad.

Strangely enough, Sam seemed to have become an even better person than he was before in the next season and there was no mention of his evil turn as had been heavily suggested. This aspect is largely criticized now since it can be seen as a way to keep fans hooked for the next season at the time with no intended payoff.
