Fans of Riverdale didn't have to wait very long after the season finale of season 5 — season 6 returned only a month later with a special 5-episode event known as RiverVale, of which two episodes have aired. In this season, there's something fishy going on in the beloved town, with the introduction of an alternate universe brewing with ancient magic, pagan rituals, and plenty of mystery.
Season 5 ended with quite a cliffhanger in the town of Riverdale which left in question the lives of main characters, a lot of which remains unanswered in the RiverVale special event. In fact, this new development only brings up more questions about the rest of season 6.
8 What Is RiverVale?
While fans can see that RiverVale is an alternate reality of the sinister little town, it's unclear how it came to be. Does it exist on a separate plane or did the story of RiverVale write itself over the events of Riverdale?
It's likely that the curse that Cheryl read out in the season 5 finale brought about the change, but fans can't be too sure. Everyone wants to know what this new town and its new name means, and this is just one more thing that doesn't make sense about Riverdale.
7 Did Archie And Betty Survive In The Real World?
The season began with Archie waking up from a dream about a bomb ticking under his and Betty's bed, but fans know that what happened was real, and no stray dream from Archie's subconscious.
So it still remains to be seen how the two of them survived Hiram's last ugly trick, and if they got out unscathed. It's worth noting that Archie has already casually been sacrificed in the new universe of the show, so he looks like he's in danger of never coming back. It's unfortunate because Betty and Archie were one of the few couples that made sense on Riverdale.
6 How Will Sabrina Make An Appearance?
The most awaited event in the show is the crossover where Sabrina (who was previously presumed dead) comes to Riverdale to help Cheryl and the gang. Fans know that she's going to be making her appearance in episode 4 of season 6, but the nature of her visit is a mystery.
For disappointed fans of the canceled Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, this brings new hope for the revival of their favorite character, and it's a matter of time that they will see how she reaches Riverdale, how permanent her stay is, and whether she's still alive or RiverVale exists in an older timeline of hers.
5 Will Hiram Come Back?
One of the best characters introduced after season 1 of Riverdale, Hiram was an integral part of the show and the chaos that ensued in the town due to him was highly entertaining to watch.
While it's widely known that Mark Consuelos is no longer part of the main cast, fans are still hoping that he'll come back for some guest appearances soon. He left Riverdale on an explosive note, so it would be quite a thrill to see his reign of terror return and haunt the gang in Riverdale.
4 Will The Trash Bag Killer Return?
Season 5 saw new killers like Old Man Dreyfus and his family who murdered Polly and several other women along the Lonely Highway. However, the Trash Bag Killer, aka Betty's obsession while working at the FBI still remains a mystery.
It's unclear why he was introduced in season 5 with almost no plotline given to him, and he did little but haunt Betty's nightmares. It could be that he has a bigger part to play in season 6 since he was truly dreadful and chilling, or he could be a long-forgotten plot hole like others on the show.
3 Is The Magic Here To Stay?
The show has gone through some major evolutions since it premiered in 2017. What started off as a mystery show about a single murder with the Archie gang spiraled rapidly into organ harvesting cults, serial killers, love triangles, gang wars, a sudden time jump, and now finally: magic.
The introduction of magic was quite sudden, and now the town stays steeped in it, so it is safe to say that Riverdale is now a supernatural horror show? Or will it revert to normalcy after the RiverVale episodes? Only time will tell.
2 Is Cheryl Going To Stay In A Cult?
It's hard to keep up with Cheryl Blossom, and so much doesn't make sense about her. A character who started her arc as a misunderstood teenager who hid her abuse by being spiteful and mean descended into pyromania, who then formed her own church with her mother, turned it into a pagan cult and started performing magic. Phew.
Fans are keen to know whether this witchy avatar of Cheryl's is here to stay, or will she return to being a cheerleader/ cheerleading coach with a penchant for red.
1 Are Archie And Toni Actually Dead?
RiverVale has had some notable deaths already, the most shocking being Archie's sacrifice at the hands of Cheryl and the whole town, and Toni turned into a child-terrorizing ghost known as La Llorona to keep Baby Anthony safe.
It's unclear what impact the events in RiverVale have on Riverdale, which begs the question: are Archie and Toni coming back? And can someone die twice in two universes and still be alive, somehow? Here's hoping viewers get answers soon.
