ANTM: Sarah Hartshorne Admits Contestants Were Only Paid $40 A Day

America's Next Top Model has gotten its fair share of criticism in the years since the show ended, but now former contestant Sarah Hartshorne has admitted that while competing on the show, contestants were only paid $40 a day. ANTM aired from 2003-2018 and followed a group of aspiring models as they fought to win the coveted title of "America's Next Top Model." Though the show was extremely popular throughout the 2000s, in recent years, fans have been calling out the once-beloved show for its poor treatment of the contestants. The news that models were paid just $40 a day adds to the criticism the show was already receiving.

Throughout the series, host and former model Tyra Banks assigned the girls some outrageous challenges and photoshoots. The young and vulnerable contestants had to endure many of Tyra's antics, such as a runway challenge where they had to walk in a fashion show while avoiding the large gold pendulums swinging back and forth above the runway. One model was struck by a pendulum and knocked off the runway while the show's judges watched from the audience in shock. Tyra was also infamous for pushing the limits during the show's makeover episodes. She'd typically pick at least one girl to do something crazy, like shave her head, causing her extreme emotional distress, only to eliminate her from the competition not long after.

Now, past contestant Sarah Hartshorne has revealed that for all of the wild adventures contestants experienced on the show, they were only paid $4o a day. Sarah revealed on Twitter that not only were contestants only making a small sum of money but there were no residuals and they had to pay for their own food. The contestants who all lived in a house together, presumably owned or rented by producers, often complained that other contestants were eating their food. At the time, it seemed like petty drama manipulated for the show, however, Sarah's tweet explains why the models were so angry with each other.

Considering the popularity of the show and everything Tyra put the girls through, they deserved a salary far greater than $40 a day. As it becomes more celebrated in society to talk about past traumatic experiences, a lot more models may start coming out with their stories of how they were treated on the show and it will be interesting to see if anyone from the show ever addresses the rumors. While America's Next Top Model is no longer on tv, it's crucial that the model's treatment doesn't occur on any other reality competition show. All contestants deserved to be fairly compensated and treated with respect from Tyra and all the judges on the show.
