Netflix’s Money Heist thrust fans into a thrilling world of unbelievable robberies, all boldly pulled off by a crew of lovable thieves. From the Royal Mint to the Bank of Spain, the members of the gang have done and said some unforgettable things along the way.
From Nairobi’s brave declarations to Tokyo’s last words, there’s no shortage of memorable quotes from the massively popular series. With the recent conclusion of part 5, it’s the best time to look back at some of the best lines from the entire show.
Whether fans liked him or not, most can agree that Berlin’s story arc is one of the more fascinating ones on the show. It’s so compelling in fact that he appears several times long after his demise in season 2.
Fans learn more about Berlin’s seemingly nonchalant attitude towards his terminal illness over the course of the show. He never feels sorry for himself and is unapologetic about his grand goals for the last few months of his life. His hedonistic personality ensures that he always strives to get what he wants, even if it is a dignified death for the sake of his crew’s lives.
If there’s one Money Heist quote that perfectly captures Nairobi’s personality, it’s her line about love and courage that comes after an impassioned monologue. Her brilliant response to Palermo’s needless taunting puts the cruel member back in his place, as he realizes he has messed with the wrong woman.
She unashamedly tells him that unlike his unsaid confession to Berlin, she is bold enough to tell Helsinki that she loves him. Although the unrequited feelings weigh on her, she prefers having them out in the open instead of left unsaid. This turns out to be the right decision, as fans may recall her tragic fate not long after that same speech.
Palermo faces off against Sagasta in a tense scene in the final season. Both sides are obviously hurting, as Sagasta had just lost the majority of his men, while Palermo and the crew suffered the loss of Tokyo.
As they sit across each other while the rain dramatically pours from the broken roof of the Bank of Spain, Palermo points out that they’re not so different. Sagasta is quick to correct him, telling him that he’s at least fighting for the right side. Palermo’s response is a smart comment not just about their situation in the bank, but about the message of the show as a whole.
Tokyo is undeniably the most polarizing character on the show. One of Tokyo’s best quotes in Money Heist highlights exactly why some fans love her, while others can’t help but despise her for her reckless actions.
Her chaotic relationship with Rio has put the rest of the gang in trouble more than once. Fans may remember how an argument between them in the first season leads to the identification of the robbers thanks to a hacked phone. Tokyo’s impulsivity and need to party also indirectly push the group to pursue another heist. It’s all worth it for her, though, as nothing matters more than her love for Rio.
It’s safe to say that most viewers were feeling frustrated rather than sympathetic after Rio’s unexpected run-in with the CNI. He gave up paradise for a poorly timed phone call, after all. That sentiment changed once fans learned exactly what the young man had to go through in Alicia’s hands, though – every waking moment was hell for him.
His video admission of how they tortured him and locked him in a tiny box is almost too painful to watch. It really put things into perspective for him and gave him the courage and maturity to call out Tokyo’s toxic behavior.
The way the Professor corners Tamayo in the finale is his most brilliant “checkmate” yet. Even Lisbon is shocked to hear about the secret plan the Professor had been brewing long before the heist began.
Tamayo essentially had two choices: he could either refuse the gold-covered brass and kill the gang, then be forced to watch the nation fall into bankruptcy, or accept the Professor’s demands and fake gold, which would turn him into a hero in the country’s eyes. It’s a risky but ingenious solution that no one saw coming and was the perfect way to cap off the exhilarating final heist.
Although Tokyo has transformed over the Money Heist's seasons, one thing that never changes about her is that she’s a romantic. Fans learn about how she lost her first and true love in a tragic way, which helps her understand that there can be more than one love and one life within a person’s lifetime.
She tries to help Rio grasp this concept during their last moments together as well, tearfully telling him not to be sad, as it’s the “first day of” his “next life.” It’s a tear-jerking concept that’s perfectly portrayed in the heartbreaking scene, which redeems her character in the eyes of many fans.
There’s an uncharacteristically tense moment between Lisbon and the Professor when they find themselves up against the wall in the Bank of Spain. Lisbon confronts him about how he keeps saying that heists are his way of talking to his deceased father and brother. She asks him to face the fact that he does it for himself, not for anyone else.
The Professor has his biggest transformation on Money Heist when he echoes this conversation in his standoff with Tamayo just a few minutes later. He looks back towards Lisbon for a moment before saying a line fans won’t soon forget – he’s proud to be a thief and is finally owning his identity, no matter what anyone else thinks.
Viewers were likely unsure about Alicia’s role in the final season. She tortured Rio and held the Professor hostage, after all. Any fear about her loyalty is removed after the moving scene between her and the Professor, though.
As they hide in an apartment, she asks him to pretend to be her friend, just visiting the baby. She starts to cry when she recounts her husband’s devastating death several years ago, admitting that her involvement in the heists is an attempt at avoiding her feelings more than anything else. It’s in that moment where the Professor decides he’ll never let her down, as she’s now officially part of the gang.
Fans can’t be blamed if they ended up sobbing during the gang’s tearful final reunion after the tough heist. They all gather in the hangar, hugging each other and crying – they know that they had all just gone through something extraordinary.
The Professor gives a heartfelt final speech and as the camera pans, fans will notice the missing faces in the crowd. As Rio, Monica, Stockholm, Denver, and the rest of the group share bittersweet smiles, viewers likely can’t help but feel as if they achieved something along with the robbers, who they have been watching and cheering on for the past four years.
