Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 Synopsis Teases Sally Versus Leatherface

The official Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 synopsis teases a battle between original final girl Sally Hardesty and horror villain Leatherface. The latest installment in the horror franchise is intended to be a direct sequel to 1974's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and mostly disregard the events of the previous films. The film hails from director David Blue Garcia and writer Chris Thomas Devlin, the latter of whom penned the script on an original story from Don't Breathe duo Fede Álvarez and Rodo Sayagues, who also produce the film.

Development on a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre film has gone through a few different iterations over the past five years, with Lionsgate originally planning five more installments in the franchise after the 2017 prequel Leatherface, though they would lose the rights due to a delay in its release. Legendary Pictures would later enter negotiations in 2018 to produce both film and TV installments, with Álvarez signing on as producer and Devlin as writer the following year, though production would initially see some problems when directors Ryan and Andy Tohill were replaced after just one week by Garcia. With production on Texas Chainsaw Massacre having wrapped in mid-2020, Legendary would choose to reunite with Netflix to give the film a streaming exclusive release.

On the heels of releasing the first trailer and photos for the film, Netflix has released the official Texas Chainsaw Massacre synopsis. The plot details tease final girl Sally facing off against Leatherface and the reason behind the horror villain's resurgence. Check out the official synopsis below:

"Melody (Sarah Yarkin), her teenage sister Lila (Elsie Fisher), and their friends Dante (Jacob Latimore) and Ruth (Nell Hudson), head to the remote town of Harlow, Texas to start an idealistic new business venture. But their dream soon turns into a waking nightmare when they accidentally disrupt the home of Leatherface, the deranged serial killer whose blood-soaked legacy continues to haunt the area’s residents — including Sally Hardesty (Olwen Fouéré), the sole survivor of his infamous 1973 massacre who’s hell-bent on seeking revenge."

The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre has garnered plenty of comparisons to Blumhouse's new Halloween films in its decision to take the direct sequel route with its plot and ignore previous films. Interestingly, while David Gordon Green's slasher may have received better reviews, 2013's Texas Chainsaw actually utilized this format prior to Halloween, establishing a new timeline with the murder of most of the Sawyer clan, save for Alexandra Daddario's Edith Rose Sawyer. Much like Halloween, however, the official Texas Chainsaw Massacre synopsis teases an exciting confrontation between original survivor Sally Hardesty, now played by Olwen Fouéré due to the loss of Marilyn Burns, and Leatherface.

Though the Texas Chainsaw Massacre synopsis may not offer much in the way of how the film could address previous installments, Álvarez has confirmed the film doesn't do away with all previous Texas Chainsaw movies. It seems unlikely that Daddario's Edith Rose or other former survivors could return to the fold for the new film, namely as the film shifts the events from Newt, Texas to Harlow, though the producer's love for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 could set up the return of other familiar faces. Only time will tell when Texas Chainsaw Massacre hits Netflix on February 18, 2022.
