Tom Holland and Zendaya have opened up about how their height difference caused complications for some Spider-Man: No Way Home stunts. Holland and Zendaya portray Spider-Man (a.k.a. Peter Parker) and MJ respectively, in the MCU. The two first starred together in Spider-Man: Homecoming and reprised their roles for Spider-Man: Far From Home. The two are set to appear once again as Parker and MJ in the third installment in the Spider-Man franchise, No Way Home. The film is the most anticipated film of the year and presales are booming as its December 17 premiere date approaches.
The film has raised anticipation with the revelation that it will be bringing back many villains from Spider-Man's past. Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman, and Lizard will all appear in the film. Meanwhile, rumors have prevailed that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will be returning as Spider-Man, as well. However, another large appeal to the film is the adorable romance between Parker and MJ. While viewers were enthralled with their onscreen chemistry, the two faced some difficulties in their shared scenes
In an interview on The Graham Norton Show, Zendaya and Holland told a hilariously adorable story of how their height difference complicated their Spider-Man stunts. In particular, they pointed to a scene where Spider-Man swings them onto a bridge and sets MJ down. However, because Zendaya has a couple of inches on Holland, she would land first. Holland would then land and his feet would swing out from under him, requiring Zendaya to catch him, which didn't quite sit well with his need to be the smooth, cool superhero. Check out their story below and watch their exchange in the video:
Zendaya: It's a good story. Well, you see, there's a particular stunt. I don't know if it's in this, but Spider-Man swings us on top of a bridge and he places me there.... So, he's suppose to gently, you know, rest MJ on the bridge and walk away from her. Because of our height difference, obviously if we're on the same point (we were attached), I would land before him because my feet obviously hit the ground before he does. So, what would happen?
Holland: So Zendaya would land and I'm the superhero, I'm suppose to look cool. And she would land and then I would sort of land like this, and my feet would swing from underneath me and then she would catch me. And they'd be like 'Cut!' and I'd be like 'Ugh! Stop doing that!'
Zendaya: You were actually very lovely about it. You were like, 'Oh my gosh, thank you.'
The story is adorable but also highlights the practical issues that actors and actresses sometimes face on set. Few would consider a few inches to have such an impact, but when performing complicated stunts it certainly can make a difference. Fortunately, Holland and Zendaya seem to have taken their height difference in stride and can easily joke and laugh about it. Recently, Holland and Zendaya confirmed their couple status in real life, making this story a cute insight into their behind-the-scenes interactions. The fact that Holland made a point to thank Zendaya for catching him especially captures their adorable relationship.
While the story was described as a complication, it isn't likely that viewers would have minded watching Zendaya catch Holland, instead of the other way around. Not every male is taller than his female counterpart, and a taller female who steadies her partner should be normalized. More importantly, superheroes spend so much time saving others, it only makes sense for them to have someone to catch them at the end of the day. Holland and Zendaya laughing about the stunt further proves that height differences and gender roles don't really matter when it comes to two people helping each other out. Spider-Man: No Way Home releases on December 17 and there is no doubt Holland and Zendaya will continue to share their adorable BTS stories leading up to the big premiere.
