Friends: The One Episode That Suggests Joey Is Actually Smart

There are many Friends theories out there, most of them focused on who is telling the story, when and where it’s actually set, and what happened to characters that suddenly disappeared, but there’s one that hints at Joey being smarter than everyone thinks – and all because of pancakes. Created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, Friends debuted on NBC in 1994 and ended in 2004 after ten seasons and lots of ups and downs in the lives of the main characters.

Friends followed a group of young adults (Phoebe, Monica, Rachel, Joey, Chandler, and Ross) living in New York City and doing their best to keep balance between their personal, social, and professional lives. Over the course of ten seasons, viewers met many of the partners these characters had, with most of them ending up being irrelevant, specially Joey’s as he wasn’t looking for anything serious. However, there was a situation with one of his dates that made way for a theory that points at Joey being smarter than he seems.

Joey is known for being a dim-witted womanizer and food lover, with food playing a very important role in his life (never forget the “Joey doesn’t share food!” moment), and his love for it might have been enough to trick his best friend into thinking he was very into one of his dates, but all he wanted was pancakes.

Season 7’s episode “The One With Ross’ Library Book” had a subplot involving Joey, Rachel, and a girl named Erin. In it, Joey has a one night stand with Erin (Sex and the City’s Kristin Davis), and asks Rachel to get rid of her, telling her that Chandler used to make pancakes for the girl when telling them Joey wasn’t interested. Rachel and Erin end up getting along, and Rachel convinces Joey to give her a second chance. Things take a turn when Erin isn’t interested in Joey anymore and asks Rachel to tell him. Joey is hurt by this, and Rachel offers to make him pancakes. Nothing out of the ordinary here, except maybe the possibility of it being a manipulation of Joey to get those sweet pancakes.

A theory posted on Reddit explains Joey planned it all so Rachel would make him pancakes. The author explains that Joey loves food but can’t cook, and a girl not being interested in Joey is very weird. At this point in time, Joey was back in Days of Our Lives, so he wasn’t struggling with money anymore, so he could have paid Erin to help him with the plan: he asks Rachel to get rid of her, and he gets to eat pancakes. Of course, Rachel getting along with Erin wasn’t part of the plan, and so the only option left was for Erin to leave Joey, so Rachel would make pancakes to cheer him up. The author even adds that Joey couldn’t contain his excitement when Rachel offered him pancakes – because his plan finally worked.

The theory might seem shallow as it’s about Joey and his love for food, but it actually suggests that there was so much more to Joey, but he never let that side of him shine. Whether it was all a manipulation or not, in the end Joey got pancakes and they helped him feel better, but you might want to keep this theory in mind next time you watch this particular Friends episode.
