Celebrity Show-Off: New TBS Series To Feature Celebrities Competing From Home

Following Fox's massive success with The Masked Singer and the ongoing spread of the coronavirus, executive producer Craig Plestis is now bringing South Korea's remotely-made Celebrity Show-Off to the U.S., which will be hosted by The Big Bang Theory actress Mayim Bialik and is set to air on TBS.

As a TV executive, Plestis has credits that include Deal Or No DealThe Biggest LoserThe Apprentice, and Last Comic Standing. In 2019, the producer found a new hit show with The Masked Singer, which is a U.S. adaptation of the South Korean show King of Mask Singer. This follows a years-long trend of Hollywood adapting IP from South Korea, with ABC's The Good Doctor and NBC's  Better Late Than Never being other notable examples in recent years.

Despite the fact that The Masked Singer had a rocky start in terms of mainstream popularity, the show has only grown over the course of three seasons, and a fourth season is already confirmed for 2020. The Masked Singer season 3 was particularly attention-grabbing and culturally relevant, as it revealed contestants such as vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin under the Bear costume and Grammy Award-winning rapper Lil Wayne under the Robot costume. Now, executive producer Plestis is adapting yet another South Korean format, this one perfect for the social distancing era.

As reported by Deadline, TBS has greenlit Celebrity Show-Off, a 10-episode competition series that will feature celebrities creating content straight from their homes. Hosted by Mayim Bialik, each Celebrity Show-Off episode will feature five stars creating online content that must attract the highest number of views. Every week, the contestant who produces the content with the lowest viewership and engagement will be replaced by another celebrity. Confirmed competitors include Diplo, Nene Leakes, Dwight Howard, Gabi Butler, Bella Thorne, Ja Rule, Jason Mraz, and Kevin Smith, among others.

Celebrity Show-Off is a US adaptation of the South Korean seriesMy Little Television. Like the Korean King of Mask SingerMy Little Television also aired on Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC). Instead of winning cash prizes, the contestants on Celebrity Show-Off will be competing to raise money for charity. It will be entirely up to each celebrity to shoot and produce content on a weekly basis, mimicking the process that many digital-first content creators have been perfecting for years. It is of note that this TV format fits perfectly with the social distancing guidelines that have been put in place around the world in response to the spread of the coronavirus.

Only time will tell if Celebrity Show-Off will have the same mainstream appeal as The Masked Singer. However, given that the world is still evaluating whether it is safe to fully reopen physical businesses and resume life-as-usual, this might become one of the few Hollywood productions that could stay on air even during periods of quarantine.
