The Wandavision honest trailer celebrates the Marvel Cinematic Universe show while pointing out how online theories got almost everything wrong about what was going on. Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as the titular characters, Wandavision is easily the most discussed TV show of 2021 so far. The series blended classic Marvel action with homages to several classic TV sitcoms and managed to get fans speculating on just what was happening, from episode 1, "Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience," through episode 9, "The Series Finale."
Fans and critics alike spent most of Wandavision's nine-week run trying to figure out if Mephisto would appear, or Benedict Cumberbatch's Dr. Strange would debut, and whether Evan Peters was playing the new X-Men version of Quicksilver or not. Some of those theories were closer to happening than others, with Cumberbatch saying he would have appeared if he wasn't so busy. But others were never a possibility. For example, Jac Schaeffer, the Wandavision showrunner, had no idea who Mephisto was before doing press for the show. Instead, despite all the hints and potential Easter Eggs in the show, Wandavision turned out to be about Wanda's grief more than anything else.
Now, the honest trailer for Wandavision devotes a great deal of time to point out that all of the theories posted online ended up almost ruining the enjoyment of the show for audiences. After taking the time to acknowledge the show's many sitcom homages and the central premise of the show being about Wanda's attempts to overcome grief, the honest trailer then rips on all the theorists who came up with every possible solution to the show's mysteries and got it all wrong. There's still time to make fun of the show's use of Marvel tropes, though, as well as a sequence pointing out how, actually, it wasn't "Agatha All Along." You can watch the full trailer below:
Of course, the honest trailer isn't really mocking those who came up with the theories but rather making light of the endless theorizing around the MCU in general. It's pointing out that Marvel is almost a victim of its own success, making audiences feel like there has to be a connection to other movies or franchises when there isn't. Wandavision itself cleverly made use of this tendency by casting Evan Peters as Quicksilver, knowing fans would assume it meant introducing the X-Men to the MCU.
They did this, even though Peters was never meant to be the MCU's Quicksilver. In the end, the point seems to be that Wandavision is enjoyable regardless of how much it connects to the wider MCU or not and that it was a brave decision for Marvel to make a show about grief as its first live-action outing. Whether die-hard fans can accept that or not remains to be seen.
