Director Justin Lin confirms Hobbs and Shaw could turn up in Fast & Furious 10. Right now, all eyes are on F9, the latest installment in the adrenaline-pumping Fast & Furious franchise. Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew/family are back for their next adventure, and they're welcoming the returns of some familiar faces. Several characters from past Fast & Furious movies are back for F9, including Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) and Magdelene Shaw (Helen Mirren). Most excitingly, Han Lue (Sung Kang) has seemingly been revived following his death in Fast & Furious 6.
And yet, for all those who will be back, there are two notable absences in F9. After becoming a franchise mainstay in Fast Five, Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbs will sit this one out. So will Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), the bad guy-turned-tentative ally from Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious. Johnson and Statham led their own spin-off in 2019, Hobbs & Shaw, and could return for a sequel in the future. It remains to be seen where else they could appear, but they just might return to the main Fast & Furious series for the tenth movie.
Lin recently sat down with CinemaBlend to discuss F9 and answered a pretty major question on fans' minds: Will he bring back Hobbs and Shaw for Fast & Furious 10? Lin didn't give a definitive answer, but he did admit that he doesn't think of either character as gone for good. Because of that, they could very well return. He said:
"I think that’s always been our approach… So many of the conversations I have is about characters that are not even in there, but are still, obviously, they are living and breathing in this universe. On this one, when I came back, I was thinking a lot about Hobbs and Shaw, and all of the other characters. I never think of them as being gone, for sure."
Little is known about Fast & Furious 10 now, save that it will be the first in the franchise's two-part finale. Seeing as Hobbs has played a major role in the most recent films, it stands to reason that he will make some kind of appearance in the final movies. Johnson and Diesel famously had an off-screen feud that could've blocked any onscreen reunion, but in 2019, Johnson publicly thanked his co-star and hinted at a return in Fast & Furious 10. Now that it's clear Lin is open to it as well, Hobbs' return is looking pretty good so far.
As for Shaw, some fans might want to see him learn that Han is alive and well. After all, Shaw was the one to kill Han at the end of Fast & Furious 6, thus kicking off the "Justice for Han" movement. With Hobbs & Shaw 2 currently on hold, there could be room to squeeze the bickering semi-allies back into the main series for at least Fast & Furious 10. Perhaps F9 will provide some clues about where the two characters are and maybe even pave the way for them to return. Only time will tell.
