Better Call Saul Season 6 Premiere Date Undecided Says Producer

It's been over a year since Better Call Saul's season 5 concluded on AMC, yet there is still no confirmation on when season 6 will air, according to the show's producers. Season 6 is expected to be the show's final season and will wrap up the story of Jimmy McGill's (Bob Odenkirk) descent into the criminal underworld as his alter ego, Saul Goodman, just before the events of Breaking Bad. Production on the show is still in progress, despite Bob Odenkirk's recent heart attack on-set.

Better Call Saul has proven to be a breakout success, with fans praising it for its restrained and emotionally resonant approach toward prequel storytelling. Although familiar faces from Breaking Bad do frequently cameo, the show has demonstrated that it can tell a compelling story without relying on pre-existing characters as a nostalgia crutch. And old characters that do play a significant role in the story (most notably Giancarlo Esposito's iconic Gus Fring) receive an additional layer of depth outside of their depiction in Breaking Bad. After season 5's explosive finale, anticipation for the show's final season is at an all-time high; unfortunately, it seems like fans might have to wait a bit longer before they can see the show conclude.

In a recent interview with Den of GeekBetter Call Saul's executive producer Thomas Schnauz gave an update on the season's premiere date. He claims to have "zero idea when or how the episodes will be aired," although production on the season is supposedly trudging onward after Odenkirk's incident. Check out Schnauz's full comments below:

I don’t know [if AMC will split season 6 into two parts]. Because of the COVID delays, and then Bob’s heart attack and recovery, I have zero idea when or how the episodes will be aired. Everything with production is moving forward, steady but slow. We’re filming scenes that don’t involve Bob right now. I just finished editing my director’s cut of episode 607, and I addressed some notes on my script for 611. I’m still waiting to hear the dates of when I’ll prep and direct 611.

Schnauz later confirms that the show is shooting "scenes that don’t involve Bob" for the time being, presumably to give the actor time and space to heal. It's reassuring to hear that Odenkirk is receiving ample time to recover. Given the frantic filming schedules involved in television production, the time away from the set might rejuvenate Odenkirk's ability to portray the charismatic criminal lawyer.

The lack of a hard confirmed premiere date may frustrate some fans, but any update on the show at all is welcome at this point. Vince Gilligan and co. have proven time and time again that they are more than capable of delivering an impactful finale that leaves fans both satisfied and wanting more. Hopefully, a little extra time in the oven will allow Better Call Saul's final season to out with a bang.
